What is a Lesson Like? This technique teaches a basic set of ideas. An overview: When practicing these ideas you are helped to function as an integrated whole and to do less instead of more. This brings about a relaxed alert mind and a light easy body in motion. These ideas can be applied to every aspect of your life. An Alexander lesson — usually 60 minutes long — is an opportunity to unwind and observe how your mind and body work together. In the first segment of the lesson the teacher guides you to notice how you sit, stand, walk and offers focused, supportive coaching on how to do these simple actions more easily. No matter where your problem is, you and your teacher will attend to the dynamic pattern in your entire body. At the end of the lesson you lie on your back, on a table, and settle into a restful state as the teacher gently moves your limbs, calms your system, and encourages ease and expansion. As you stand or sit, the teacher helps you sense compression in your body. Learning to release this tension brings about an enlivening of the back support muscles. Many people are currently suffering neck pain as a result of phone slump. This pain can be greatly eliminated by using your body differently while you are on your phone. As you walk, the teacher — highly trained in the subtle, sophisticated Alexander touch — gives you the feeling of a lighter, more fluid motion. That feeling then becomes your reference point when you're on your own. You recall an idea or sensation from your lesson and use that memory to cue yourself and lighten up. You learn to imbue ordinary activities — writing, speaking, washing dishes — with a spirit of observation as you notice your tendencies and explore ways to move more efficiently. Through experiences of yourself at ease you acquire a new repertoire of movement and a kind of portable body intelligence. How much do lessons cost?
